Alltel is currently blocking it's users from dialing any of the known free 411 numbers.... this forces us to use their version of 411 which is very expensive and makes money for them....

When I called them and asked them about it... they said that they had blocked all calls to any number that they were aware of that offered this service.

They claim it was regulated under the FCC and fell under the same category as blocking collect calls and 900 numbers. I think these two things are different because both can potentially cost Alltel money...

FREE 411 does not cost ALLTEL money...FREE 411 makes their money because before you get your number, you have to listen to advertisements... they charge people to advertise with them... That's why it is free...

IT IS NOT LEGAL TO FORCE SOMEONE TO SHOP WHERE THEY DON'T WANT TO SHOP... THIS IS FORCING YOU TO USE THEIR SERVICES... SO IS THIS LEGAL?

any info will be appreciated....

maybe I didn't make myself clear..... there are at least 10 companies out there that have 1-800- numbers that offer free 411 look ups in return for listening to their advertisements.... look it up... THAT's where i am getting my information... I am not talking about using 411 through alltel and asking them not to charge me... I'm talking about me dialing a 1-800 number that has absolutely nothing to do with alltel at all.. the same as any other i call....and they are blocking THAT number.... you people did not understand the question...

I don't know where you are getting your info that the 411 is free as it is not anywhere I have seen these days. Cost a minimum of 50 cents for getting a number. and yes it is legal for them to do what they want with it as it is them that own the company and they have the option of making the rules they want their customers to live with as long as it goes along with the FCC rules. If I own a business and want to charge you a dollar for any information on what the price of the item you want to buy is, i ahve that right as long as it is not against the law to do it, which it is not. Now if I am the only one you can get the item from, you will pay it or just not get it and no law has been broken. Is it fair? NO but life isn't fair now is it? Just have to learn to live with it or get another provider.

It is legal. You opted into their service. You should've asked about things like that. But you've signed a contract and are bound to it now. YES it's legal. Next time, read the fine print.
