I am planting a japanese maple in a garden bed about 20'x9'. It will get morning sun, but be shaded from the Atlanta sun in the afternoon. There is nothing else planted there and I need some suggestions. It is directly in front of the house and the maple is the tallest plant I want. It will be the main focus point of my tiny urban garden. Thanks for any help.

Search Japanese gardens by image, they seem to be beautifully balanced with colour, texture and size. Juniper is great, also maybe look at dwarf conifers.

I would suggest a low growing juniper- different texture and color to bring out the color and softer textures of the maple.

Impatients, marguarite daisies, calla lillies, rock roses, almost any plant that grows low and likes eastern exposure. Or you could go with a groundcover, ie, creeping vinca, or creeping charlie.
