choose not to go? And what about women? Will they be drafted as well?

It would depend on how draft laws are written. But the draft has about as much chance of being reinstated as Michael Richards has opening at the Apollo Theater. In the past only sons weren't exempt, but a sole surviving son was. That was the premise for Saving Private Ryan.

If there were a draft in the U.S. , an only child would have to go if drafted. If two sons were already enlisted and the third (and last) son were drafted, he would have to go.

There is no system in place to register women for the draft, so even if a draft started tomorrow, women could not be drafted.

I wouldn't worry about a draft right now. Although some in Congress would support it, most do not. Many who bring it up are trying to make a point about the burden of an unpopular war falling disproportionately on different groups in society. They do not really expect to draft anyone.

I would highly doubt that they would bring back the draft. As an all volunteer military force is much more proficient then if you would have a bunch of guys over there that didn't want to be there at all (ie:Vietnam). Women do not have to register for the selective service, so therefor they cannot be drafted. All males 18 or over are required to register, so they are eligible to be drafted. When drafted they usually rule out individuals based on college and things like that.

If it worked like the last draft, it makes no difference if they are an only child or what. The only deferment was being in college (for a time) and for medical reasons.

It has not been determined about women.

Other countries draft women, so I don't think given equality that women will be exempt from the next time they institute the draft. As for one child, they may be drafted but regulated to stateside/office duties.

Everyone sould be 'eligible', or on the hook.
The key with the proposed draft is that there is no worming out of it by getting college deferment (Clinton) or getting into air national guard (Bush) -but everyone would have to go.
The reasoning is, that would make it fair, and make lawmakers think twice before sending the military into harms way.
Also reason it will never pass
