The Wii has 512MB of built in memory that you can use for game saves and Virtual Console games. You don't have to buy a memory card (SD card) but its a good idea to have your game saves in an external source to be safe. I personally use the Wii's built in memory and eventually will buy a 2GB SD card for virtual console games and other future nintendo goodies.
