It is made of wood and the prisoner stands hunched over with his hands and head placed in half circle cut outs, then the top is with matching half circles is put down and locked. They were then made to stand in the town center to be punished. It was used in the movie A Knights Tale.

They were called "Stocks". When a person was placed in them, others would sometimes pass by them and throw garbage or animal feces on them.

It was a form of humiliation/torture device used to act as a deterrent to others who might be considering breaking the "law".

Details :-

They usually consist of two pieces of wood or iron, hinged at one corner with a lock at the other. The two planks have holes cut so that an offenders ankles were locked in place when the stocks are closed.

I believe it is referred to as "stocks". The most interesting medieval torture device is the "Iron Maiden"....very freaky!
