This is a tough question since we have no idea what species youre talking about. It really depends on your fish load. If you have one or two small fish in a large tank, they can go for weeks without a filter. If you have a crowded tank, I would expect problems within a few days. If you are doing a science experiment to see how long they last with no filter, I would need to know what species, what size, how many, and the volume of water in the tank.

If you are talking about a tropical acquarium and by filter you mean not just the filter but also the air supply.......

If you are asking because you need to move house/transport your fish/get a new pump or something then the answer is that, if kept in their original tank water (which is VITAL) fish can last up to 8 hours before lack of oxygen and temperature drop kill them.

Honestly though, the shorter the time period the better. Stress can kill a fish before environmental conditions so if you are moving them make sure to keep them in the dark, and perhaps add some stress-coat to the water.

A fish won't last too long. We had fish that the filter broke and we didn't know and it lasted a month. So I'm not sure if it was luck or they feed on the grime. It mostly depends on the condition of the fishes health and the type of fish. I'd say if the fish is hardy then it would last about a month.

I have kept goldfish, won by the children, for 5 years or so without a filter. Half the water was changed weekly They eventually bred so I put the large ones in a new pond, where they were happy ; we then watched the babies grow and put them in the pond when they were about 4cm. The young goldfish were black and took 2 -- 3 years to turn gold.

What kind of fish are you keeping? I don't recommend keeping more than 1 goldfish in a bowl without a filter, but any other kind of fish may suffer.

When I moved house i had to completely empty the tank which was full of tropical fish, i put them in a large bucket and they stayed that way for over a week as i had to start the tank from scratch..

4 years on, and i still have the same fish !!!

Well what kind of fish do you mean? Goldfish and Betas don't need a filter. But all other fish need filters and heaters. They will die w/out one.

depends on what you are talking about. some fish can last years with no filter as long as you do constant water changes, others last months, others days... it depends on what you have and if you have plants in the tank, airation, or anything else.

if it's gold fish, I had one last a few years in an old butter bowl...lol
anyway, as long as you keep the water changed frequently, the fish should be fine.
