Get the Microsoft Malicious software removal tool, for November,Spybot Search and destroy, Windows Defender,(All Free) Symantec sometimes has removal tools for certain viruses etc.

Start your computer in safe mode then do the scans and removal, Use the full system scan options.

If you find you have to do a clean install of Windows XP as a last resort, this time get all your security software downloaded and saved on a disk. Get it all in place before surfing the net.

A scan only shows you what you have, it doesn't get rid of anything. You have to get the name of the bad program and all the little sub-names it installed on your hard drive and delete them, or buy an anti-malware or antivirus program that knows the names and can delete it.
