The best program for this is 'Spybot -- search & destroy'.

What they do is they scan & protect your computer from:
adware
spyware
malware (malisious software)
hijackers (programs that hijack your computer, & control it)
keyloggers (these record what you are typing like paswswords)
dialers (they direct you to a premium charging line)
They also have a feature where you can immunize your system. This is so that your computer doesn't get infected by the same spyware, adware etc. again (unless you tell it not to).
You can also fix problems found on your system.
This is free software (they work by donations via paypal), via download, no disk.
Only thing is that the program does not update by itself. But that is not a problem.
There is an update button in the program, you press it & you can see what updates are available to download (updates released every week).
One final point, say if (for example) you don't english, they also have the program in other languages.

Get a pop-up blocker, and Ad-Aware SE Personal, from Lavasoft. Get Spybot S&D *Like so many people said :P* Also, get Windows Defender Beta 2 from Microsoft, an excellent program for spyware, malware, and trojans.
For viruses, get AVG anti-virus and AVAST! too. But leave one as an automatic scanner while the other one only scans when you want it too.
For a firewall agaisnt hackers get Zonealarm as it defends agaisnt inbound and outbound intruders.

Adaware SE from Lavasoft, Microsoft Windows Defender, SpyBot search and Destroy, Spyware Blaster, Spyware Guard, a-square free version. ALL of these are free ware and very good--none are 100% everything so it pays to study through and choose more than one + your antivirus program. No disc required.

AVG do a free adware and anti virus. To compliment it, also use Zonealarm free firewall.

Personally, I've have tried quite a few. I like Spybot. Just go to spybot.com. It is free, although they do request donations.
