A TiVo box does require a subscription in order to provide its basic functions of letting to pick which shows that you want it to record for you. Their subscriptions generally run between $13-22 per month depending on your area. This subscription lets your TiVo box periodically dial-in and update its database of show programming for the upcoming 2 to 3 weeks.

One of the answers that you go suggests contacting your cable company or satellite company instead of TiVo. In response to TiVo, many cable companies have developed imitation products which are less expensive. However, you get what you pay for. I have seen a number of my friends travel down this road... and several have since upgraded to the real thing.

Many of the imitation products are more difficult to use, have less of a timeframe of upcoming shows, or have some other proprietary quirkyness to them. As a TiVo subscriber for the past 2 years, I recommend going with TiVo product and subscription.

I'd also suggest finding a combination TiVo box with built in DVD recorder. This lets you archive off to disc.

Extra Note: It usually runs about 5 bux a month to 10. DirecTv is 4.99/ a month. If you have to use Tivo's actually service and ur cable does not provide for it, yes you have to pay for that as well.
