with prepay phones you buy phone cards, or you can charge minutes to your credit or debit card by calling the 800 number. I have only used simple freedom wireless, which is now part of verizon wireless, they worked well, and minutes were a lot cheeper than some of the other plans out there. you will have to look around and do your research. good luck to you.

Instead of being billed on a monthly basis after the fact as in a regular (postpaid) plan, you pay for your minutes before you use them. If for example, you buy a GoPhone, it will come with a $10 starter card. Those minutes probably expire after 30 days or something like that, and depending on the plan, your usage will cost as little as $0.10/minute. When you run low on minutes, you can refill minutes by adding money to the account. Adding larger amounts to the account usually gives you a better rate and also more time before the minutes expire.

I like T-Mobile a lot because their rates are very competitive ($0.10/minute, Gold Rewards status after first $100 gives you extra minutes on refills). Cingular seems to have a better selection of phones, but you can get around this by getting them unlocked or buying a used phone on Ebay. Their $0.10/min plan requires a daily charge of $1, however, and their other plan without the daily charge is $0.25/min. Both Cingular and T-Mobile have good nationwide coverage, and both prepaid plans let you roll over the unused minutes when you refill.

I have a cingular prepaid phone

If you are going to use it a lot, you may be better off with an actual plan. I usually refill my minutes about once a week and put 15.00 on it. You have to buy the phone, it's not like getting a plan and getting a free phone with it. I paid 130.00 for mine, but it's not a standard phone.

Do your research and find the one that works best for you.
