An audible pop could signify a fracture or a torn tendon/ligament. You probably have a lot of swelling and bruising if it is severe and it is difficult to say whether is it a fracture or sprain without an XRAY. You can walk if you have fractured your ankle, it will just be painful to do so (as you stated). You need to go to see your physician so you can be diagnosed and properly treated. You may need to be in a boot or cast, and may need to walk on crutches to allow it to heal. If you do not follow the advice of medical professionals your ankle will never heal completely. Even if it means altering your workout program.

I walked into a hole in blacktop once and severely sprained my ankle. It swelled huge and I was sure it was broke, anything that hurt that bad had to be broke. Next day the pain was so bad I went in to a doctor. After an Xray it was determined it was sprained. He explained there are different degree's of sprains and mine was the worst it could be. He said a broken bone would not hurt as much as a sprain as bones have no nerves. The good news was when I went in I could not walk and they put my foot in a removable walking cast and when I stood up, I could walk with no pain. It was like a miracle and they explained its because the cast holds everything right where it belongs. So, I suggest you go in for a Xray so it can be determined its a break or a bad sprain. If they suggest a walking cast, go for it, the pain will be gone when you walk.

Being a x-ray tech(on the night shift) I see patients present like you all the time. While I was reading I thought "probobly a sprain" until I got to the "crunchy" part. My wife's daughter thought she sprained her ankle and didn't go to the doctor. Turned out she had Talus (the bone in the top of your foot) dome fracture. LOL wish i could draw a little picture for you. Real bad news if not treated immediately. So a "3hr. wait" might be worth it. Too bad your not here, haven't had a patient yet. GOOD LUCK P.S. I have had patients walk on fractured ankles before. Not many but it happens. Put ICE on it!!!!!and keep elevated

There is no way that you will be able to avoid seeing a Doctor. For one, the only way to distinguish between a broken ankle and a sprain, or even a fracture is by X-ray.

Without medical treatment, these injuries will never completly heal. Especially, a broken bone, without treatment, can lead to amputation because circulation is often compromised.

So as soon as you get this post, I strongly urge you to visit your local hospital emergency room. After X-ray, your Physician will advice you futher into you recovery.

Hope this answers your question!

When I sprained mine it got very swollen. If you heard a crack that sounds more like a break. You should kind of be able to tell by the looks of it. I'd have the doctor check incase!

Well, first of all I hope you're okay. second of all you should have gone to see a doctor or given it a couple of days to see if there was swelling of some sort. try not to walk on it as much. you don't want more pressure on it than it can handle. HOPE EVERYTHING GETS BETTER. GOOD LUCK AND GOD BLESS YOU!!!

You probably may have suffered an hairline fracture.Go to a bone specialist and an x-ray would clarify.Till then whatever you do please do not rub the swollen portion with oint ment etc.Vigorous rubbing can worsen a fractured joint.don't try self medication.
