My emachines computer that is at least 5 years old is always freezing. I constantly am doing disk cleanups and defragging. Also running virus scans with Norton Antivirus. I run Spybot Search and Destroy and Adaware Se. I also always install windows updates. But it STILL freezes. Is this because its old? or what?

You should try to upgrade Internet Explorer to Version 6 with SP2. that might help. (don't download Internet Explorer 7). Visit http://www.microsoft.com and go to the Download section. Then go to the Internet section.

Go to RUN and type MSCONFIG and go to the Startup section. UNCHECK the programs that you do not need at startup.

It helps to use Disk Cleanup. Then RIGHT CLICK on your C drive and pick PROPERTIES. Then go to the TOOLS section and click on CHECK NOW. Check both tests, then pick YES to run the test after restart. Restart your computer to run the full test. Then use DEFRAG. That will help.

If you are using Windows 2000 or Windows XP, you might need more RAM. You see, with Windows Updates and all of the Anti-virus definitions, you might need 512MB of RAM or more. Check your system at http://www.coastmemory.com

By the way, I also use Norton AV and SpyBot and Ad-aware on Windows 2000 Pro. I am currently running with 1GB of RAM and it works just great. I have a 3GHz ASUS motherboard that is about a year old. My previous computer was a 450GHz PIII with 512 MB of RAM on a Tyan motherboard and it was just getting too slow. I still have that rig as a backup, but rarely turn it on. I can simply MOVE my hard drive into the old rig if something horrible happens to the new rig.

Good luck and Happy Computing!

There are lot of reasons for why a Windows computer freezes. Since you say nothing about type of machine, laptop or desktop and nothing about operating system win2000, XP or other, it's hard to diagnose the problem. But - a 5 years old computer that has never had the operating system re-installed will definetly need a complete re-install of the operating system. For this you need to take a back-up of all files that you want to save for the new system, including favourites. You will also need the original system CD that was sold with the computer, or a genuine version of XP. If you don't know how to do this, consult one tht has the knowledge. Also freezing could be caused by overheating, clean the computer for dust inside the box or inside the laptop, but this is probably not the problem in your case. Good luck!

Apparently there is enough corruption in the system files. It can be a zillion things.

So yes and know, it's because its old and has had enough time to be online and downloading to the extent of causing crashes and freezes.

This can be for a small example:

Registry errors
missing or damaged files
damaged hard drive

And those are a few that wouldnt be caught by virus scanning, defragging, disk cleanups, or updates.

My emachines randomly turns off. I hear they're crappy computers. You may have a virus though so check that out. Otherwise your computer maybe over-heating or something.

My new Dell always freezes too! It drives me crazy. I contacted the technician and he said my harddrive might be corrupted. I'm suppose to return the computer to factory condition (he told me how) but I don't want to cuz it'll erase all my pic, videos, and games.
Maybe your harddrive is messed up too. I hate computers!!!

Go to TrendMicro website and run the free online virus scan PCcillan. Sounds like you've gotten a trojan or something.

You might need to clean the dust out from inside the computer. It may be overheating. Or it might just be time for a reinstall of Windows.
