racism was there since the dawn of time, in animals, humans and all living creatures. it is a philosophy of superiority over another and the differences they share.

Racist is a modern word overused today for those who are so desperate to be "politically correct". Mankind has always had disputes with others due to differences in religion, way of living, etc. This comes from fear - fear of what the other may bring to their lives. Man is very reluctant to change. These disagreements between people were not always based on skin color.

Now, racism has been defined to mean white hates black or any color other than white. Unfortunately, this is all too common in our society. European man has always been quick to react to whatever they perceive as bad for them or what is different.

Thomas G's remarks are "racist". He jumped very quickly to slavery and how the black man was mistreated. In reality, a relatively few black slaves were mistreated as most people tend to believe. Yet, Slavery is a sin against God and all of mankind. No man should be controlled by another. But listen very closely G. The black man was not the first slave. White men have enslaved other white men and were treated as a whole far worse than the black man was. If you are looking for someone to blame, blame the African chiefs who sold their own people to the white slave traders for trinkets. History books seem to ignore this. No one alive today was involved with the slave trade or owned slaves. Forget it. Move on. Just because a black man has some misfortune doesn't mean it is "racism". White men has ups and downs too. Get an education, get a job, and earn something. Quit waiting for handouts. Unless you have done some work for someone and they have neglected to pay you a fair wage, no one owes you a damn thing.

Slavery still exist today. People become slaves to drugs and the wishes of their peers. Be your own person. Do what you know to be right. Have pride in yourself and your work. Learn to judge people on their own merits and not the color of their skin. Until then, "racism" will never go away.

Look into a countries history, and you'll see the root of the racism. The why it started. The way it began. The reasons why people can't let it go in the present day. Its a vicious cycle, and for some reason it doesn't seem to change. Keep in mind though, for there to be a prejudice it doesn't have to be an issue of race. Look at the Middle East. Its all about religion.

To start off, some of these answers are incredibly ignorant!

Why does racism exist?
People feel undermined about themselves and think that by making someone else feel bad they would feel better. People are scared of what they dont know so feel they ought to label people they dont understand.

How did it start?
Racism is like a disease, the start is uncertain but you know it exists.

Why did it start?
As already mentioned, people do it to make up for something they are lacking, it's like bullying, where someone picks on someone to make themselves feel better.

Who can be racist and to whom?
Anyone and everyone can both be racist and have racist remarks made to, frankly its all very hypocrit- we are supposed to be civilised yet such a flaw exists!

Before I got on YA I really wasn't aware of how much racism there is. It really bothers me and makes me sad.

To me racism is ignorance. Thinking you know something about a different race of people and going along with it instead of finding out for yourself first hand....it's a form of laziness.

People do more research before buying a new car.

Racism is a built in feature of humans, just like hair and arms and legs. Sad, but true. In Christian terms, it is just part of the sinful nature of "man." We don't have to like it, but there it is. We can do little to change it.

Racism was stirred up by slave traders so that people thought it was OK to treat African slaves the way they did. Unfortunately it still exists in some small minded people today....

unfortunately yes, since the white men have discovered coloured people. As you may know hudreds of years ago, there was a booming trade economy for slaves that were transported from Africa and Asia. Eversince, blacks have been treated worse than animals and they are always being put down just because of their accents and the colour of their skin. It is disgfraceful, a fantastic question- I hope you get a lot more answers
