I was thinking of purchasing either a hyundai or kia becauwe the price seems right. But I remembered that everytime my cousin wanted to change a part like an oil filter or air filter, he had to buy it from the honda dealer at what seemed to be an inflated price (this was back when honda's first came out in the US). Does hyundai and kia have parts available at my local parts store?

Yes you should be able to get the parts at many stores like napa and autozone. However, you might want to look into customer reviews of Kia and Hyundai. They are cheap vehicles, no doubt, but how long do they last? Edmunds.com is a good resource.
