We moved into a house that was assembled in 1946, and so no standard sized doors exist in the house. the door between the (uninsulated & unheated) summer porch and the living space is non-existant (the frame is still there but the door itself isn't). We are unable to buy a standard door for it and a custom door wold be a fair chunk of change.
the space inside the frame opening is 80.5inches by 31.5 inches. We would like to figure out what it would take (and then figure out the cost) to build a door compared to getting a custom door from the shop. thanx in advance.

Not wishing to be funny but if you have to ask you probably can't do it. Buying the tools to build a door would cost as much as buying a door. Buy a 6-8 x 2-8 door, attaching a door sweep to the bottom should take up about 3/8," a 1/8" clearance at the top should make up the 801/2". Using a straight edge and a circular saw cut 11/16" off the lock side of the door at a 21/2 degree bevel and bore for the hardware. Cut the hinges in the door to match those in the frame.

a standard door is 80 x 32 x 1 3/8, check to see if a 1 3/8 thick door will fit door will fit your frame. if it will, buy a standard door and cut off 1/2 in off either side. then get a theshold or a door shoe and install to close up the gap under the door. you might have to cut the bottom of the door if the clearance is not high enough

I'm having a similar problem myself. I am thinking about going to a second hand building supply place and finding an old door that's close to the right size for not a lot of money and cutting it to size with my circular saw. Clamp a straight edge to the door and run the saw along it using a blade with lots of teeth. Not a rip blade. Homecenters sell them.

That's not the brightest idea in town, but I don't have a lot of money presently.

I totally agree with Mom-to-Max about there being nothing wrong with playing out in the rain. The kids won't catch their death of cold, or contract any horrible old flu because these are spread by virus's and not by getting wet.If the boys are in the pool at midnight at the weekend with adult supervision what harm is there in that? None I can see. During the week if they have to get up early for school there may be a lack of good judgement there, but it shouldn't happen too regularly or their schoolwork will suffer. But all in all Mrs Linda, I think you are playing too active a role in the lives of these kids and should really adopt the role of observer and let their parents tell them what they can or can't do.

The first two answers are good accurate answers. In order to make a door you will need some very expensive tools (shaper, planer, table saw, and jointer - a few thousand bucks) and lots of skill. There is a good reason a lot is charged for a custom door.
