Most Amish and Mennonites live very quiet and simple lives and most are not rebellious and unhappy. I grew up around a Mennonite community, and most of them are normal, decent people who live in close knit communities and families. Amish and Mennonites are not completely disconnected from the world, and they play important roles in local economies, selling produce, baked goods, handicrafts etc. They still use modern public hospital services and medicine, and many pay limited taxes (since they don't use all government services). Amish and Mennonite children spend much of their day running around and playing and are generally well-adjusted, healthy individuals. Some of them are abused, but some children of all backgrounds are abused. The Amish and Mennonites aren't especially noteworthy is this respect. Amish teens are granted a year or so, to "run wild" and decide whether they want to be part of the Amish community as adults and most of them do stay.

The government isn't in the business of helping those who don't need help. When the Amish children finish school they can leave to live wherever they wish and to decide whether or not they want to return to the Amish life.
