My 1998 Jeep Cherokee makes a loud thump when shifted from drive to reverse and from reverse to drive especially with the wheel turned to the extreme left or extreme right (much louder than a u-joint), and it shakes when I take a curve. I'm pretty good with car repairs but I haven't found the root of the problem. I've taken apart the transfer case and rear end and found no mechanical problems.Normal backlash for an 8 1/4, and no wear on the transfer case. To add to the the confusion the front shaft is out and all of the above listed issues are still occuring. Any thoughts? The transfer case is ok, and so is the rear end. I have the front drive shaft out, and the engine mounts are good. Could it still be in the front end? I have uneven tire wear (it appears as if the tires are cupping). The transmission shifts good, and doesn't slip. I'm finding it hard to believe that it could be in the transmission or rear end. Any thoughts? Please Help!

i own a repair shop, and the front axle joints are bad in it,,this is what causes this to happen you need to check them and see how bad they are, because they will have to be replaced on it but if i did one of them,id do both sides ,and just replace the whole axle it cheaper than buying just a CV joint,,good luck,,i hope this help,s.

Is dodge man slipping? The front end on a 98 cherokee doesn't even have C.V. joints. Hmmmm...
I also doubt having to replace the entire drive axle. How could it even be a U-joint in the front axle if the problem isn't in 4wd only? I think ball joints, spring mounts and bushings is the best call here. I've had the same experience with a chevy dana 44. The pop didn't go away when I changed out the U-joints, and unless you've switched to IFS (Ha!) you won't need to replace any C.V. axles. I would check those spring mounts real good. Happy jeepin'.

I have a 98 as well and some of my noise comes from the suspension mounting points. i.e. the bushings are out and im sure my ball joints are worn as well. also the popping noise could be two things, one being a bad u joint or where the driveshaft yoke slips into the transfer case. you didnt mention the trans mount. but you say it does it when full turn just shifting so i would start looking at all the differential mounting locations, and dont stop at the bushings, i have seen the bolts wear as well. good luck

It sound like you need to replace one or both of your front drive axles. I am positive that's what it is. On top of that if you can get under your jeep while its cold try to turn your drive shaft. If it moves at all you are going to need to replace your U-joints. Make sure that you get an alignment done, tire rotation and balance, and see if your tires need to be replaced.
