There is lots of detailed information on UnExCo's Squirrel Message Board website:

http://unexco.com/squirrel/squirrel.mv

They explain the best ways to deal with nuisance squirrels in buildings. It's too much info to list in this answer, but check out the website. It helped us a lot when we needed to trap some squirrels. Good luck!

to Byderule, have you ever had rodents running around in your house? Squirrels are rodents (they're cute, but still rodents) and can cause a lot of damage, chewing holes, eating the insulation off electrical wires (which can cause a fire), and carrying disease in their droppings.

You'll have to get a squirrell trap. Trust me it is a lot cheaper than hiring some "exterminatior" or whatever who will charge you hundreds and more squirrells will just come back. Once they find a spot and their scent is there they will always come back. The trap looks like a little cage with a trap door. You put bait inside and then the squirrel will get caught inside the cage and you can release him outside (the further away the better). If you own the trap then you can use it on however many squirrels you have. My mother is up to 26 in two years and we live in the city! Good luck.

The live trap suggestion is a good one, and....they work without harming the animal. But, the real problem here is to prevent future intrusions. You or someone else must inspect your roof thoroughly and find where the squirrels are getting in. Some repairs may be needed, and you may need to cover an opening in an overhang with hardware cloth (wire mesh) and some screws. Do NOT close the opening with the squirrels inside or they may well chew their way out....through your roof.
