I agree with Melanie- chameleon's are VERY difficult to keep healthy and happy. I would look up care sheets online - try www.kingsnake.com - and make sure you have the time and dedication to maintain the habitat with the proper heat and humidity, lighting, food, etc. before you jump into owning one.
If you've never kept reptiles before, you might consider trying a hardier lizard first- bearded dragons and leopard geckos are good starter reptiles, and they'll get you used to the care needed without as much risk of your pet falling ill or dying. I've kept reptiles & amphibians for 10 years, some quite exotic and hard to care for, and I STILL wouldn't own a chameleon- they're just too delicate.

A chameleon is NOT a good starter reptile. They have very specialist needs and are rather difficult to keep. If you are determined to have one, then you will need to do a lot of research before you can even start.
Please also be aware that many chameleons are taken from the wild every year to stock the pet trade. Buying a wild-caught animal as a pet is immoral in every way. Captive-bred is the only way to go.

Research the type of chameleon you plan on getting. Set up the tank BEFORE you bring one home, to make sure you have it at correct temperature. They aren't easy to care for. Here are the two types that I believe are most common. I could be wrong:
Veiled Chameleon:

They have them at petstores, but look in your newspaper or if there is a breeder becfause they probably are more handled than in a pet store.
But like with any animal make sure you find out proper care and diet. They are hard work!

catch one,it is easy ,they walk very slowly.
they will blow at you when you pick them up ,but it is mostly show
make sure that they have access to many live insects, that will be the hardest part about keeping them
i used to have them in the kitchen as a natural kind of fly control
