There is an evolutionary advantage to fearing the unknown... or at least being prudent when encountering something unknown. Knowledge is safety... it allows you to discern whether something is dangerous or not. An "unknown" is something that could potentially kill you. In prehistoric times, an instinctive fear of the unknown would keep a child safe inside the cave at night away from the saber-toothed tigers - hence, this gene trait would continue to be passed on.

We fear the unknown because it is our natural reaction to fear what we don't know or control. The unknown is not something we can manipulate to our personal preference, so we fear it because it could possibly do harm. The fear is always coupled with curiosity, therefore spawning discovery

The unknown is something we fear because we are not familiar with it. We feel relaxed at home because we know that it poses no threat to our well-being; however, we are not comfortable in situations that we are not familiar with. For example, your natural instincts make you fear high school as an anxious soon-to-be freshman because you know you are leaving what you knew and what you were comfortable with, and you are venturing out to what you do not know. You fear it because you are not sure what to expect, and it's as if you are fearing something you don't know yet, but you are fearing what you think it will become.

The Unknown is a phantom. It has no gender and takes any and all forms. It comes to each of us differently and is never recognized until it is too late. It can be a shadow or a multiplication problem; a new address or the taste of avocado. Once it shows itself, it becomes the known and loses its power to bring fear to our hearts.

You fear the unknown because you are resistant to change, therefor you stay in what is comfortable to you. Some people welcome change which makes them more of the type that does not fear the unknown.

It is easier to fear than it is to strive to understand. In order to learn and fully understand, we first have to battle our own fears, if you overcome fear, you live for the unknown.

because we afraid we won't know how to protect and defend ourselves. With the known, we know its tactics and how to deal with it, but with the unknown, we dont even know if we're capable of protecting ourselves from it.
