the silver, which is the common currency. However the silver was not minted. It circulated as ingots which weighed a nominal liang (about 36 grammes) although purity and weight varied from region to region.
It was only in the very last years of the Ming dyansty when Li Zicheng threatened Beijing in 1643 and 1644 that paper currency took place again.

I believe they used silver and gold shapes called "taels".
