It is read as "less than".

So "x < 5" is read as "x less than 5" and a possible answer would be 4 as it is smaller than 5.

We always read simple inequalities from the x part of it.

So "2 Some possible answers would be 3, 3.9999, 2.00001...

The symbol < means less than. It is one of the inequality symbols.

The other symbol is >, which means greater than. There are other inequality symbols I cannot make using a regular computer keyboard.

Keep in mind that the arrow ALWAYS points to the smaller number.

Sample A:

100 > 25..Read: "One hundred is greater than twenty-five."

Sample B:

75 < 700...Read: "Seventy-five is less than seven hundred."

Got it?

x
reverse the symbol to > and the smaller part of the symbol still points to the smaller quantity, but x>y is described as "X is greater than Y"
Neat eh?

add a line underneath it making it a > with a _ underneath ( my keyboard won't do it) then add the phrase "or equal to".
