I have heroes like Matthew Shepherd. But I don't have a role model. However, more recently I have come to admire the lives of gay men I have met on 360. If they existed for me when I was younger I would be in a different place today.

As a heterosexual guy, I can't say I have "gay role models" in the sense of people who light a path for me to follow in my own sexuality. I do have role models who are gay though, in particular a woman called Sandi Toksvig, who is a writer, and who, since I was a child, has been a source of inspiration through her work and in what I have known of her live and her living of it. Freddy Mercury was another - simply the power of his vision, his skill, and, I guess, the ordinary privateness of his private life in spite of the huge spotlight that was on him. And on the flipside, would have to give an honourable mention to Sir Ian McKellen, for his continuing quest to bring pleasure to his audiences and refusal to be a lofty luvvie, while speaking out against the skewed public and even governmental perception of what "being gay" is all about.

This is going to sound stupid. I'm not gay and my role model isn't either but I admire Elizabeth Taylor for her tireless efforts in educating people, before it was trendy, that AIDS isn't a "homo" disease, that everyone needs to stop using it as an excuse to be homophobic because plenty of straight people were getting the disease as well. She also made us realize that people were in great pain and dying and instead of insulting them, let's work on a cure for AIDS and help those already suffering.

I admire Ian McKellen for being a celebrity who doesn't make a big issue out of his homosexuality but nevertheless remains true to himself.
Louis Sullivan is a hero of mine, though he is now deceased. He was a female-to-male transsexual who helped establish the community and showed that they came in many sexual orientations (he was gay post-transition).

Greg Louganis. He is stunning, physically. He's got a great heart, too. He's done a lot of work related to animal welfare. I have a signed copy of his autobiography, "Breaking the Surface." I stood in line to have him sign it, and it was worth it.
As hot as he was in 1984, wearing his speedos, he's even more handsome now with his gray hair and dazzling smile. I greatly admire what he's accomplished in life.

Kind of...my girlfriend. I don't know if I would call her a role model, but she has inspired me beyond belief. Before I met her, I hadn't told anyone about my sexuality but seeing her and how she had no fear, no shame and no regrets about who she was was amazing. It brought me to be true to myself and those around me. She was so comfortable with who she was and she helped me to be comfortable and proud of who I was. Luckily I am stuck with her for the rest of my life!
