I think that's just silly. If she's okay with you listening to rap or hip hop, I can't understand what the problem could possibly be with rock music. Both can carry messages that are offensive to some people, but both are very popular amongst younger people.

Maybe you should sit down with your mom and let her listen to some of the music that is popular today - 50 Cent, Eminem - then play some rock music. As far as I'm concerned, rock music is much less degrading to women and uses much less foul language. She'll probalby notice that too and hopefully change her mind.

If it's a cultural issue... I don't understand the problem either. Millions of white people listen to hip hop and rap, even though the majority of artists are black. Just because the majority of rock artists are white, doesn't mean that other ethnicities, including black people, shouldn't enjoy them. That's just silly... and well, discriminatory too.

I personally think that there's nothing wrong with a black listening to rock, and that you should be free to listen to what ever you want. Plus I love rock to. But if you are part African American I could see your Mom's point. Jazz, R and B, Rap, etc are often associated with the African American culture. It is part of African American heritage that many people feel you should be proud of, which you show by listening to that type of music. However, I think that there are many ways to show pride in your heritage other than listening to a certain type of music. One great way is through painting, drawing, or any other way that you can express yourself.

My suggestion would be to sit down with your mom and really try to understand where she's coming from. Once you really know why she has the opinions she does, then maybe you can talk about it, and she may realize that it's okay for all people all all ethnicity to listen to what ever music they prefer. That's part of what the whole civil rights movement was about. Good Luck!

There is nothing wrong with you liking rock. Ask Mom what she doesn't like. Perhaps the lyrics are too explicit, or you have the volume too high. Respect her opinion, you will find that she will respect yours if you are showing good judgment. Listen to all types of music, it is all wonderful. Good luck to you.

nothing at all. you have you own tastes in music, and alas colour is not an issue. in actual fact, it shouldn't be an issue in the first place. not all whites love pop and rock, and not all blacks love hip hop and r'n'b. besides, i love all types of music, irrespective of the artists or musicians ethnic background and so its great to read that you have a different preference to music. and anyway you shouldn't be stereotyped or typecasted for listening to a particular genre of music that other people associate blacks such as yourself with.

take jimi hendrix- an afro-american in his own right, he was one of the world's most famous rock guitarists, and he was black!

I see nothing wrong with it! If your mother is black she would know that rock n roll exactly got started by black artist back in the fifities. Over the decades, whites have took it over and blacks got into doing rap music. Rock on!!!

Absolutly nothing. Ask your mom why she doesn't like it. If she refuses to tell you keep asking. Yet, do all of this calmly. If she says it's the devil's music then put on a band like Ten Years, Disturbed, Evanescence, but NOT Slipknot or Korn although I love their music. Good Luck, God Bless, and ROCK ON!!!!!!!!

I don't know, I guess your mom just doesn't like the music. But you should try playing some of your favorite songs to your mom and try to sway her.
