Hi Derek,

I agree with the person who said change the fuel filter as that was what I was going to ask you to do first, or if you have had it changed in a recent service then it should be ok.

Do you have a habit of running your tank low, or buying your fuel from el cheepo garages, if so the filter could be gummed up.

The reason I think it is the filter is this, a good clean and new filter will allow the fuel demanded by the engine to flow freely , but if the filter is gummed up, it will restrict the flow. The engine will start and tick over but as soon as you rev it up the engine dies, am I correct? is this what is happening?

You wont lose anything by putting on a new filter, infact you will gain.
It could be the pump itself if the filter is fine, but there could be other reasons.

Give it a try, let me know how you get on or if you still have probs.
Generally, if your car is regularly serviced then you shouldn't encounter too many major probs, look after your car and your car will look after you.

Again, please let me know how you get on, Good luck m8.

If it runs for 1 or 2 seconds and cuts out it could be an immobiliser problem, try another key if u have one, if not make sure the chip hasnt fallen out of your key. It could be other things - ignition coils and distributors fail regularly on vw's, but i'll guarantee u it wont be a fuel filter!
