Which is the better solution for keeping a tortoise in? I have found mixed reviews on which is better. I've also heard some wood is poisonous to tortoises. If so what wood is it? Thanks

not a vivarium. They cause too much condensation. Tortoise tables are much better and you can build one yourself. Instead of wood shavings, try untreated peat. Personally I find the best thing is astroturf because it looks nice, they can grip it better to move about and you can wash it in the bath.

i have been keeping tortoise for years {hermanns} and i would not use anything other than vivarium s
there is a few good books on amazon on tortoise and you should pick up a few as these will help you greatly and will save you getting wrong answers from d1cks on this site.
you should look closly at the breed of tortoise you want to keep as the all have different requirements likes and dislikes and so on.
there is a host of poisonous plants for tortoise i have them in a book {sorry it is at home im at work} that is why to get a refence book?
if it is in a plastic vivarium you can use wood chip on a base and feed him veg {not iceberg lettece though} so he wont be in contact with poisionous plants.
a vivarium new will cost about £180 including lamp etc.
DO NOT BUY A TABLE IT WILL NOT HOLD THE HEAT this is the voice of experence trust me

Dint use a Vivarium, i have a Hermanns tortoise, and i know someone that did keep there Marginated tort ina vivarium and it suffered from respiritary problems for moths. This makes the humidity in the vvurim humidity to hight, and the tortoise can suffer long-term problems from this. I have a open-top pen type thing for my hermnanns i havnt about any poisionous woods, i used beech style wood , he/she is 1.5 years old now and doin great!!!

Go here-
http://www.tortoisetrust.org/
there is a help section, and ask there. I think a table is better...but use your best judgement, the most important thing is to get as much info as possible on your breed of tortoise-they all need different things!

Turtles need a place where they can move, see plants, breath earth ...
You must to pay attention with the humidity, they need it, but the place must to be hot, they need uva ( 12 hs ).
Dusty places are dangerous for them !
So they need the right humidity, a hot place too, plants , water, uva...
Do not forget giving calcium, and vitamin A to you turtle !
I hope it is ok fot you, !

In my opinion a large vivarium using stones is a good idea. By the way, you can try to build your own scenario using plaster of Paris. You can also embed the plaster of Paris with pebbles. But remember, after the plaster has set, keep it immersed in after for sometime to water away excess chalk
