The pilot light for my Glow-worm back boiler unit keeps going out when I use my central heating.

This is a recent problem. Everything was fine until 24 hours ago.

Whenever I re-light my pilot light it seems to stay on until I turn on my central heating - and then it goes out after between 20 minutes and three hours.

I re-lit the pilot light last nite, for example, and it stayed on all nite. But it went out this morning 20 minutes after I switched on the central heating.

I'll be calling a CORGI repair man at some point. But I would like to be well briefed beforehand.

When my pilot light goes out (not a Glo-Worm though), I turn the temperature dial down, wait for a minute and then turn my heating or water booster on to see if it re-lights.
If not, I just wait longer and try again. Last week it took several attempts over an hour but it got itself going again, mainly because it had overheated and I was just had it up to high for the poor thing to cope!

Failing that, do call a heating engineer but make sure you know what's he gonna charge you up front and also if you're boiler is still under guarantee/insurance etc. If you need a new one for example, is this something you could claim on your insurance or is that considered a long wear and tear?

Good luck ....Celine

Possibly the pilot light is either not quite strong enough due to some dirt in the jet. Maybe the pilot light is slightly out of line or maybe the bi thermal strip or the high expansion gas system is faulty. this may be okay during the night when everything is still but once the boiler is firing and air is passing through it may be blowing the pilot light slightly but enough to allow the sensor to cool and shut off the gas

The pilot light heats a thick wire which is the probe of an instrument called a thermo-couple. If this is not hot enough or receives heat erratically, (pop pop sound), then the pilot light needs turning up or cleaning out.

Basically I would say it is in need of a service, unless it has recently been cleaned then it is the thermocouple that is in need of replacing.
