How far away is anything?
The shortest distance between two points is a straight line. If a thing, object, place, person, piece of wood, elephant, or a doodad is a certain distace from another thing, object, place, person, piece of wood, elephant, or a doodad in a straight line then the distance between them is the same as the same distance back again. However if the distance is measured not in a straight line then
the distance will differ by the amount of deviation from the straight line. I hope this is of some help to you. If not, forget the whole thing!

the best way to find out is to buy a yacht that is 36 feet long and then stand 1 foot away from the back of the boat.
with a bit of luck it won't be foggy and you will be able to see the front of the bow.
it will be more or less 35 feet away.
don't forget to listen to the shipping forecast before you try this- i wouldn't want to be responsible if you got caught in a storm.
n.b. if you try this experiment in dry dock you don't need to worry about the weather so much but be careful not to walk of the boat as there will be no water to break your fall.
