YOU lot! S/he's asking whether Tony Benn *would* have made a good prime minister, not if he *is* one! Of course, he would never have been Prime Minister, because he's not a career snake, but I believe that our society- and our idea of community- would have been better if the Bennites, rather than the neo-con New Labour clique, were in charge of Labour. Benn is one of the voices of reason in that pit of career politicians.

Antony Wedgewood -Benn Viscount Stansgate.
He changed his name to Tony Benn, because he wanted to become the Labour Prime Minister, but could not do so as an aristocrat, he ditched the title but didn`t get the top job. He was too left wing for labour at that time, who were trying to rid themselves of that image. I like him, but I don`t think despite his education and background that he would have made P.M. He has a son called Hillary Benn who is a very very clever guy, he is more and more in the lime light these days. Keep your eye on him, he is going places, maybe even to the places that his father did not manage to.

No that's Tony Crosland - Benn was (and is) like a petulant child trying to gain attention and undermine the work of others. Harold Wilson said of him, "he immatures as he gets older", and that is still true. Benn's latest display of poor judgement by sharing a platform with the hideous dictator-worshipper George Galloway is more evidence that he would have been a disaster in high office. However, his books are still worth a read.

Having personally met the man, only the once, mind you, he impressed me no end with his personal integrity - an unusual thing among politicians.
As for his being the greatest Labour Prime Minister Britain never had - that depends on what stage in his political career you choose. As Minister for Energy he was a mere apparatnik, as a backbencher he was a very good constituency MP. Now he's retired from Parliamentary politics he seems to have evolved into a far left icon - but now speaks the truth. All in all, he probably would have made a good Prime Minister - and given the boys and girls at Langley nightmares.

No. Tony Benn lives in a fantasy world. He has always had a vision of a world as he thinks it should be, conveniently ignoring realities such as human nature and free will.

I agree with the fans of Tony Benn's, I am one myself.
I would have liked to live in a country gouverned by him, and it IS a shame that the Labour party lost all its credibility as a party for the "small" people.

Perhaps he did, but he did a great deal of damage to his own party.
It is dreadful to think what would have happened to the UK had this poseur become PM.
Usually the "greatest never had" is given as the Scotsman, John Smith.

In my opinion he is a most untrustworthy man, very very wise after the event. Many years ago during the miner's strike he marched with them to show his solidarity, being a millionaire,I wonder how much of his riches went into the strike fund? What a hypocrite!
