Between the social climate of the time, the demands placed upon him as a result of his chosen profession, the pain of Sickle Cell Anemia...he was a man carrying some really heavy burdens. I'm sure, like most alcoholics, his struggle began when he noticed that drinking could help take the edge off. That's the thing that a lot of people fail to realize; if drinking or drug use didn't provide at least some relief, we wouldn't try it. It just gets a hold of some of us.

Paul Williams had sickel cell disease. There were times he could only mouth the words while the real singing was done off stage by another. Eventually, that other singer took over when Williams had to quit.
