If a red eared slider is pregnant how long before she is ready to lay her eggs. She has been spending alot of time out of the water under the heat lamps and I was told this is a sign of pregnancy. She very rarely ever came out of the water before but then I got acouple of male turtles and now she comes out of the water for several hours at a time.

Basking behavior is normal and your turtles should do it frequently. My turtles bask almost all day when Im not around. If your turtles are not basking, your water temperature is most likely too warm, or your water is so shallow, that the turtles are lethargic. As for turtles not laying if they dont have a place, this is not true. If a RES doesnt have an appropriate place to lay, she will drop the eggs in the water.

Sliders can lay anywhere from 2 to 30 eggs at a time, depending on the size of the female. Incubation time lasts anywhere from 69 to 92 days at 77° - 86°F.

From the time of mating it can be from 20-50 days until the female is ready to lay eggs.
