I think they have a book out called football for dummies. I have never read it, I learned all I know from listening to games very closely and asking lots of questions. Don't feel stupid about asking just do it.

hey just watch the game it will help u understand it
when i moved to this country it was hard to understand the game so i just kept watching the underdstood the rules and now i enjoy watching the game i am still learning and i have been watching this game for 5 yrs so hopefully this helps and enjoy the beautiful sport of football

Just continue watching the game and be visiting some web sites for sport like www.eurosport.com, www.skysports.com and www.bbc.com/sport.
It will help you know much about the game.
