I would rather spend billions on war and the illusion of safety.

I would rather spend billions helping to make our society better for those less fortunate than myself.

Well, without spending for defending ourselves, building a society of which you speak is simply impossible. That said, I do respect that you want to improve things for us all. However, I think that is best left to we the People. The government is historically a poor solution to problems we are more than capable of handling ourselves.
You're not wrong that safety is an illusion. There was a quote by Helen Keller that says roughly the same thing. I heard it when I was young, and for some reason understood and agreed with it.
But without securing our borders, and weakening our enemies until they are not a threat, the society you hope for, regardless of what it is, can never be.

#1, it's about time the "less fortunate" start doing something about it and take some responsibility. I'm tired of working 60-70 hours a week just so the dems can take more money out of my hard earned paycheck to pay for social programs for the lazy people. I'd much rather pay more to keep our military in action to keep the country safe!

Well, #1 has to come first before #2 is possible.

Your question doesn't allow for a middle ground and so there can be no answer. I would choose neither of the above.

you can't fix massive philosophical differences by throwing huge amounts of money at it. what that does is provide much better financing for the people that want to kill us.
