when i light the bbq the smoke does not get pulled up the chimney, i have a 100mm pipe in the ground to provide air, i dont know the dynamics of chimneys

It is possible that it is not high enough, it should be 3 feet above the structure. Or about 3 meters. If it is not the air going over the roof will cause a down draft.

Well either the pipe that feeds air from bellow the chimney is clogged, or the upper pipe is blocked, or the diameter 10 cm? is proportionally to small or to large in relation to the the upper tube. (suggest that you check both for clogging, and make sure air circulates with no obstacles) if the proportional relation between the tube is too big I suggest you build a funnel in the upper tube) and to be in the safe side clean them both.

you may need to open the flue... reach up in there and feel around for a lever to pull or something.
