Goldfish would die in tap water because it's disinfected with chlorine or chloramine. Both enter thru the gills and keep the red blood cells from being able to carry oxygen. They are both strong oxydizers and may also harm gill tissue.
Filtered water: it depends on what kinda filter. If it's just a carbon filter, that's no problem. If it's a R/O filter, that removes all the minerals and makes it to where the fish can't maintain it's internal fluid balance. If it's softened water, those filters replace minerals (e.g. calcium and magesium) with sodium. Depending on how soft the water is, it's similar to R/O water in that goldfish need minerals in the water to maintain their fluid balance. Filtered water may also not have enough buffers left to maintain pH at acceptible levels and a pH crash can kill as well.
Conditioned water. It depends. Just because one uses a water conditioner to detox chlorine/chloramine, doesn't mean the water is happy. You can't see ammonia, nitrIte, nitrAte, pH, KH, GH or dissolved oxygen. If any of those water parameters are off, that can kill your goldfish.

Many goldies are mass produced and are stressed out during transport. Stress and crowded conditions lowers their immune response and predisposes them to getting sick.

That water is conditioned to be safe for human consumption. Fish cannot breath in water that is clorinated.
If you have fish and before you change the water you should always draw the water at least 12 hours before you are going to use it and let it sit in the open to have the clorine evaporate out ant the water will warm to the temperature of the surrounding areas. Fish are also succeptible to temperature...

Check your temperature, test the water, are the fish stressed? If you had 1 goldfish in a small tank go to the grocery store and buy distilled water.

Your fish may have died from new tank syndrome. In every tank there are bacteria that break down wastes like fish food and excrement, there are also bacteria that break down chemicals like ammonia which results from the breakdown of waste. In new tanks the colony of bacteria is not well established enough to properly convert the chemicals into less harmful ones. You need to cycle your tank. Or you can buy start zyme and add it to the tank. make sure your tank has a good oxygen supply. Nitrifying bacteria thrive with oxygen.

The water should be from tap, then conditioned and filtered!!!
Type of water is NOT the only problem then!

maybe it is just the fish, they aren't always known for living to be 8 years old, and maybe its your tank, if you have a filter, than it probebly is not what i said above, otherwise try getting a small tank with a filter and see what that is like, or maybe its just the store you are buying them from?
