Let x = amount used oin September
Then x+12 = amount used in October
And 2(x+12) = 2x + 24 = amount used in November
Total amount used is x+ x+12 + 2x +24 = 4x+36
So 4x +36 = 132
4x=96
x=24 amount used in September
x+12 =24+12 =36 = amount used in October
2(x+12)= 2*36=72 =amount used in November

September = S
October = S + 12
November = 2S

September + October + November = 132
S + (S + 12) + 2S = 132
4S + 12 = 132
S = 30

thus October = 30 + 12 = 42
November = 60

X + (X+12) + (X *2) = 132

Algebra students! You can use excel to solve this kind of problem.

You can set up 4 cells in excel. Place any number in the first cell. (this is a first guess for "X")

In the second cell, type "=" then click the first cell, and type in "+ 12" and hit ENTER.

In the third cell, type "=" then click the first cell, then type in "*2" and then hit ENTER.

In the fourth cell, type in "=" then click the first cell, type in "+" then click the second cell, then click "+" and click the third cell.

The fourth cell will answer the equation X+(X+12)+(X*2) = ?

If you change the value of the first cell, you will see different solutions. I typed in "20" as a value for "X" (a guess) and got "92 gallons" as my answer. My next guess was "30" and the number of gallons result was 132.

30 + (30 + 12) + (30 * 2) = 132
30 + 42 + 60 = 132
72 +60 = 132
132 = 132

October (O) = September (S) + 12
November (N) = 2S

O+S+N= 132

So...

S+S+12+(2S)=132
so 4S + 12=132
so 4S = 120
s0 S = 30

So September is 30 gal, October is 42 gal and November is 60 gals

They used 42 gallons in october, 30 in september, and 60 in November....Simply minus the twelve...therefore leaving the oct+sept equal to november....so halve 120 and halve 60, and to get oct just add the 12 back onto the 30... simple when you know how!

1.sept. - 30 gallons
2.octo. - 30+12 = 42 gallons
3.nove.- 30*2 = 60 gallons

all 3 months total 132 gallons

sep + (12+sep) + (2x sep) = 132
4 sep = 132 - 12
sep = 120/4
sep = 30
oct = sep + 12 = 42
nov = 2xsep = 60

sep = 30, oct =42, nov =60 gal

let the no of gallons used in september be x
used in october=x+12
used in november=2x
total=4x+12=132
adding -12
4x=120
dividing by 4
x=30
so he used 30 gallons in september
42 gallons in october and
60 gallons in november

x=sep so x2=nov and x+12=oct
x+x2+x+12=132
x+x2+x+12-12=132-12
x+x2+x=120
x+x+x+x=120/4
x=30
x2=30*2=60
x+12=42
sep=30
oct=60
nov=42
