I would like the graphic card to be the fastest and most detailed.

well my current graphics card is ATI RADEON XPRESS 200 Series. My pc model is SR1834NX.

Your Compaq with Media Center 2005 doesn't provide much information to determine what is the best and suitble graphic card for your PC.

But I know the best for gaming are the graphic cards using nVidia GPU geforce 8800 series

It has one open PCI Express x16 slot for video card. You probably should get a bigger power supply to use the fastest and most detailed graphic card.

windows xp media 2005 is a os. how old is your compaq a 8800 series you have to have 1 gb of sys-memory windows xp 32-bit and pcie x16 plus $ 500.00 check out compusa geforce 7600gs agp cost 129.00

your going to have to give more detail as to the model of the pc. a lot of compaq pcs esp media centre versions have onboard gphx and no possibility of expansion.
