If you've got an extra hundred bucks and don't like shopping, just get it on Ebay.
If you'd rather do a little (maybe quite a bit of) footwork, just get out to all the major retailers as often as possible and hope you come in on the heels of a shipment. The Wal-Mart in my town had no idea when they'd get another shipment, but I got lucky when I was visiting my brother over the Holiday at a Toys R Us.
The number of units shipped to any given store depends on where you live and probably weather there are other stores in the area that are also getting shipments. On the release, there were only something like 20 Wii's sent out to our Wal-Mart which is the only major retialer for 30 miles in any direction.

Contact your local store (Target, EBGames, BestBuy, Circuit City, etc.) and find out what days they usually get shipments (Monday morning is the best bet). Nintendo promises to ship 200,000 Wiis/week through X-mas, so you have a decent chance of getting one if you don't want to pay extra on e-bay. If you can't get to the store when their shipments arrive, you can try to buy online for in-store pickup (I know Best Buy offers this option). If you do this, they will keep the system off the floor so you can pick it up at your leisure later in the day.

Don't use Ebay! Prices are going to be inflated by other buyers. Try Craigslist or another online classified in your area. I've seen systems on Craigslist for $300, which after tax is only about $35 more than in stores. You'll pay a little premium but it may be worth it to start playing, not have to constantly check with stores and not have to wait in a line before the store opens.

ebay would work, but you could try Wal-Mart too. I know the PS3 will be impossible before xmas, but the Wii comes in in regular shipments of 20 or so, supposedly... I work there, that's what I heard...

That is a really hard question. Check with your local WalMart and they will let you know then the next shipment comes in.
