Try Yahoo people search and you could have written your friend's name on your question as someone might know her, you might include her last known address. You can research if there is a compendium of mechanical engineers in Italy.

A friend of mind found a long lost family member in Italy on-line by going through a website sort of like our whitepages.com. Keep searching for "phonebooks" or "International phonebooks" .... etc.. Good luck.
