How about the old chestnut of recent times.........the hunt for the Weapons of Mass Destruction ?

There were the WMDs that were supposed to be in Iraq.

There's always Area 51 that "doesn't exist" but clearly does.

And there's the standard "Roswell Incedent" that was supposedly a weather balloon.

The income tax. It was implemented to fund a war, and was then supposed to be withdrawn...it never was...and is probably even unconstitutional.
