I STILL haven't figured it out yet... which sounds best?

1. cory cats and gouramis
2. cory cats and barbs
3 cory cats and angelfish
4. cory cats and ____________________ fill in the blank

I don't want mollies, guppies, or platies or tetras or any fish that is common... I want a DIFFERENT tank...not a tank full of cheap common fish that die quickly even with good care.

Or should it be just a bottom feeder tank? What would you do with a thirty gallon?

personally i like barbs tiger barbs that is you can buy them in different colours to add colour to you tank they live quite a long time if you look after them properly. and the tiger black stripped ones change colour depending on there emotions (the black stripes turn green). they also swim in the middle or top of the tank so your tank wont look empty they mix well with gouramis as well so why not put a gourami in as well.

I love cories too! But your question depends on your personal preference..barbs will zip around in a school, I wouldn't put anymore than 3 angels in there, and maybe 4 or 5 gouramis (blue, gold, opaline, or pearl-don't go with the kissing or giant) OR the smaller gouramis would be nice too, like the honey gourami.
You should also check out loaches, the butterflyfish, banjo cats (if you have fine gravel, not big-they bury themselves in it), upside down cats, farlowella cats, rams, or some of the julidicromis species of the African ciclids, fiddler crabs! There are a ton of odd fish out there!
A bottom feeder tank would be neat too! Most good petstores have at least 3 or 4 species of cory available, maybe have more than that.

Fish that you describe as cheap common fish are inexpensive not because they die quickly. The reverse is true. Supply and demand works in fish pricing. Hardy fish need replaced less often. Therefore, the prices of these common hardy species are lower because to demand is lower. Less hardy fish are always in short supply and are priced higher.
I would stay away from any livebearers as you mentioned above, as they are proned to too many infections. If you want an active tank, you might consider small Danios and Tetras. Although hard to find, Spotted Danios would work well in a 30 gal. tank.

i would choose gouramis they are not as mean as barbs which really need to keep to their own kind, My barbs eat the cory's fins. Gouramis can have beautiful colors and activity, just be sure that the gouramis don't get too big.

How about water? Just kidding. Go to your local petstore and see how the fish are laid out in the tanks for ideas.

well...................im going to start a cichlid tank soon, they're really colorful and fun to watch, and so many different varieties, but you can only keep them with that breed, or they will kill a fish in under 2 minutes.
