Will it take longer to get there in a car?

You can drive around the area, but it is generally much easier to take the "T" (subway or bus). Traffic is always heavy and parking can be very difficult, so hopping on the train to get to your destination can be much faster and a lot less expensive than a paid parking space.

DO NOT BRING YOUR CAR TO BU.

Someone made the comment that there's tons of meter parking on Comm. Ave...this is usually true, except right now there's a ton of construction going on (they're widening the sidewalks) and there is very little parking. If you actually are looking at going to BU, the student parking passes are insanely expensive and you don't want to pay that much when you aren't guarenteed a spot (read the fine print).

The T runs right down Comm. Ave and has EIGHT stops, from Kenmore to Babcock street, that are right on campus. The campus runs just over a mile down Comm Ave and you can walk the whole thing easily. Also, BU has the BU Bus, which takes students from east to west campus for free.

One more thing about cars: They get broken into. A lot. There's so many students around that do stupid things when drunk, and a lot of other people that know there's a lot of rich kids at BU with nice cars. Basically, it's just not a good idea to have a car here.

Also, cars do take quite some time because of the limited parking. Some people have to park past west campus and walk back. The T is easier, for sure.

I've lived in right in the center of Boston my whole life, so driving doesn't bother me at all. The traffic on Comm Ave isn't too bad, it's the parking around the area that could be a problem. You could always take the Green Line. It runs right through Huntington Ave and into Comm Ave, so you'll pass all of the good sites, (Northeastern Univ., Museum of Fine Arts, Wentworth College, and BU). And you can get off or back on at any one you choose. This may be easier for you if you are an out-of-towner. Good Luck

It really depends on your situation. Personally, I drive all over town. My own preference is because I live right in the city and know I need a car, I would much rather have a car, and pay something in between $5-$25 to park than to take the train. Going on Comm Ave there is TONS of meter parking you just need to allow time to drive around and hope a spot opens up. I work there and always manage to find a spot. The train is of course much cheaper. However, it'll take at least twice as long wherever you're going particularly in the BU Area. You'll need to wait for the green line, which is a trolley style train plus wait for the particular line you're looking for and usually the trains are JAM packed. I always say basically anywhere downtown you can have a car, it just depends if you want to deal with it and shell out the money or not; really around BU though I think it's an easy answer- drive! (Try to avoid dead rush hour if you can. And also, if you are going to BU they have tons of lots with permits you can buy and visitor fees!)

The subway can take you all over boston and also there are plenty of Taxis. The green line runs around the BU area and its outside at that area not underground. If you are going to be a student you can pregame at your place then take the T in for 1.25 a token. Go out and if you want you can take the T back for another 1.25 but it closes at like 1am so you might have to take a cab back. If your with friends you can spllit the fare.

Unless you have a fancy car (most BU students do since most of the students are rich international kids), leave your car at home.

Boston has one of the best public transportation system in the country and it is very easy to get around even in the BU area. The downside is the green line (which is the train that runs through the BU campus is always crowded on school days).

If I remember correctly, it's on Commonwealth Ave., and trains serve closeby. It's certainly alright to drive out that way.
