To me, it means that we never know what is going to come next, so as long as we're living, something could change for the better. Viktor Frankl is a good example of someone who writes about maintaining hope. He was a psychiatrist / philosopher who was also a concentration camp survivor. In his book, Man's Search for Meaning, he describes the experience and talks about prisoners who "gave up" psychologically and often died shortly thereafter. Frankl was able to maintain hope and survived.

If there is still life left you still have hope of getting saved or spreading God's word. After you die you can't be saved. As long as there is life there is still hope for you.
