Your uterus puts pressure on your vena cava, this reduces blood flow/ oxygen to your baby.

I slept on my back and the baby came out just fine. I didn't sleep on my back intentionally. I would go to sleep on my side and during my sleep I would end up laying on my back (that is how I naturally sleep) So if you're like me, when u sleep on your side, place some pillows behind your back so that if you happen to roll on your back you're not flat on your back. This way the baby doesn't put too much pressure on your uterus. Hope this helps...

The problems with sleeping on your stomach are pretty obvious, but many are confused as to why they cannot sleep on their back. While it may seem comfy, the weight of your enlarged uterus can actually pose serious risk to you if you sleep on your back while pregnant. The pressure of the uterus on your diaphragm can interfere with your breathing. Another problem with sleeping on your back is that your uterus also puts a lot of pressure on your aorta, which is a major blood vessel.

the baby doesn't get as much air as they should. If your sleeping on your back early on in the pregancy it isnt as bad but as time goes on you should actually sleep on your left side.

well it isnt good for circulation. The enlarged uterus presses on some major vessels.
