My question....did it just make brown streaks or did it cause an indent? Brown streaks- the next rain will "wash" them off, indents, unless they are major, will probably go away with freeze/thaw of winter (depending on were you are). Major ruts, stomp them down or wait until it freezes a little and drive over the "humps" and push them back in the ground, or add dirt/seed/straw if its an area of high foot traffic, etc.

Ruts are hard to get rid of, but it can be done. Turn over the soil in the ruts and loosen it up with a hoe or shovel, then add soil to the area making it a little higher than the surrounding ground. Then plant some rye grass, blue grass seed, or sod (depending on your location) and keep moist and cover with straw for the winter. They should almost disappear. I say almost, because they actually may end yup looking better than the undamaged areas once the grass fills in.

Is it in an area where you can drag it. I use pieces of utility poles, chain link fence, I-beam, anything you can drag over and around it repeatedly for a while works great for smoothing ruts. If you don't have room for that the old rake and shovel works pretty good.
