I'm interested to know what motivates black and asian people to get their skin bleached. Why even within black communities is it seen as preferable to be pale?

If white people tan, do we all just want to be the same colour?

That's not healthy. Think about what is in those products. If they actually do contain bleach, you don't ned any other reason not to use them. I can understand wanting to have a different skin shade. I would like to be a little tanner because I blush easily and it is embarrassing. But I don't go and put harmful chemicals to change what I am. The fact is, I don't think you can drastically lighten your skin unless you do some extreme Mr. Jackson treatment. If you are wondering about those, you need to be talking to a shrink, not me.

You should read Laura Jefferson’s book "Skin Whitening At Home" ( I saw it's also available in electronic format +video: http://www.skinwhiteningathome.com ). After 8 weeks I managed to get my skin a few tones whiter and I also got rid of freckles.

The method she teaches in her book is natural, inexpensive, and is readily available in most homes. You could even find some ingredients in your own backyard. The most wonderful thing about the method she shares in her book is that it will help you whiten or lighten your skin pigmentations, freckles, age spots, acne marks, dark underarms, melasma, or your overall skin color easily and naturally without breaking your bank or producing dangerous side effects. Good Luck!

I think it's a case of you always want what you haven't got. Straight haired people want to curl it, wavy haired people buy straighteners. Personally I am always jealous of people with colour (I'm so white I'm practically blue!) because they look great in short skirts and pale legs just look terrible.

and check out the
1940s experiment conducted by Dr. Kenneth Clark that studied the psychological effects of segregation on black children.
Its truly shocking.

A societally imposed belief of what beauty is and not being comfortable in one's own skin (literally & figuratively).

I am a short, overweight hispanic and it took years to get over my mad envy of my two half sisters, one of which is short & overweight like me, but they are both blonde & blue eyed.

It would be nice if we were all the same coffee colour but we're not and people should learn to be happy with the colour nature has determined they are to be.
