I know you can scan the computer using nothing more than a paper clip, but I need someone to explain how to read the "check engine" flashes. I turn the key to the on position (without starting) and wait for the check engine light to turn off. Then I insert the paper clip and get a series of - FLASH.......FLASH...FLASH. How do you count these? How do I know when it's giving me a trouble code?

If you do this like I suggest you will have no problem. First: with the ignition key off, insert the paper clip into the right top two terminals. Second: turn the ignition switch on, because if you have the switch on when you insert the paper clip, you can blow the computer with a voltage spike! You will have short flashes and long flashes, with a pause in between flashes. It will be like one long flash followed by two short flashes. This translates to a code 12 because the one long is 1, and the two short is 2. When you turn the key on, it will come on momentarily, and go off. Now it will flash you the code. Leave the paper clip inserted, and turn off the switch, then remove it or use it again to get the codes again to confirm you have them correct. You can go to a store like Auto Zone and they will use a scan tool to get the codes for you for free, so there is no need to use the paper clip anyway. They will even tell you what the code means, and sell you the part to fix it with. If you don't have a code book, then the codes aren't much use to you anyway.
Glad I could help. Good Luck!!!

I have never heard of the "paper clip" method before. If I was you I would go and buy a repair manual like Chiltons and go from there. Even if you can read the flashing light the manual should have a trouble code diagnostic table so you can figure out what the codes are.
