If you're having a free email account with any of the leading companies: Yahoo!, Hotmail etc. Then the mail that you recieve will be checked by the server. But, you can double check to be safe, especially for attachments.

If you're using an e-mail client to fetch and view your mail, then be sure to use the "Scan E-mail" option/feature of your AV software.

Each AV has its own set of mail filters and how these are configured depends on your AV. Check the documentation for details.

You should be able to right click and use the option to scan the email before opening. This option is added to your right click menu provided you have anti-virus installed. You do have anti-virus software installed dont you?
