The highest mountain on earth before Europeans dicovered Everest (the mountain not the surveyor) was a large peak in Southwestern China and Northern Nepal. It is known today as "Mount Everest". It was known then by some obscure Chinese name probably. (Thank you Captain Obvious)

According to my knowledge, Yes first of all Mount Everest was as flat as plains. But due to the change in the climatic conditions the snow was deposited more and more and then only it became the highest peak in the world.

Mount Everest.
Despite the fact that nobody had found or recognized it, it was still the highest mountain.
What was **thought** to be the highest mountain before Everest? Don't know.

Kilimanjaro is in African continent and has got nothing to do with K2 which is in the Hindukush range in Pakistan...
