I have just purchased a Belkin Wireless G Router for my computer, and a USB Adapter for my laptop. It is set up correctly on both systems, and it says an excellent connection is coming though, yet when I try and access the internet on my laptop, it says "You are not authorized to view this page" and I also cannot share files between computers.

Setting up the router, I had to give a password for internet access and file accessing. Do I have to input this to access the internet, and if so, where?

Both computers are Windows XP.

Please help, as I've spent close to £100 on buying these, and I don't want to waste it.

Hi

1st thing to try is plugging directly into the router via an Ethernet cable. This way you can ensure the Internet is working correctly and eliminate the wireless as a source of the issue. Now try the Internet and see if it's working?

Next try to access the router setup page. I'm not familiar with this brand but generally a lot are the same. Look in you manual for a internet address or ip address to type into you web browser typically if an ip address this would be something like 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.0 etc

If you're unable to access the web check the settings your Internet Service Provider settings in the router. There should also be a status page somewhere to tell you if you’re connected and at what speed how long for etc

If you able to access the web then the issue is to do the wireless. My initial guess would be that the WEP key is not set up correctly on your computer and laptop (This is an encryption code that needs to be set in the router and a matching key setup on the computers). I'd suggest disabling it to see if it solves the problem. I.e. get it working basically then add security.

Other things I suggest you should do:

Change the password of your router - Stops people changing your settings

Change the SSID (The id that your router uses of your router - stops people scanning for common SSID's

Prevent broadcasting of SSID (do this once you have it working) - This hides your wireless network

Enable MAC filtering (The MAC is a unique ID for each network adaptor) and select / type the MAC address for the devices that you wish to connect To find your mac address got to Start>Run type cmd at the command prompt type ipconfig /all Look for the physical address of your wireless adaptor - this is your MAC id. If you have to type it in separate each 2 digits with a :

I would try changing the method of authentication. Say for example you set the router up as WEP, try a WPA PSK (WPA preshared Key). It may also have to do with the settings of your browser. I would try to ping the IP of the other machine. Go to start> run, type cmd in that window. When the blakc dos window opens, type ping (IP adress of other machine). Try pinging websites like yahoo or google as well. Also try pinging your router (should be something like 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1).

You can also try connecting direct to the router and toggling the options, I usually use linksys or netgear myself, not belkin. They make great cables but it ends there in my opinion.

When connecting to the router, I would suggest being physically connected to the router through ethernet (you can move it and unplug later and once its working). Also check the belkin website for a possible firmware update for the router.

Feel free to email me if none of these steps worked and be as detailed as possible to get you up and running.
